Chicago's bid did not make it. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, got the winning bid. Obviously, Spain, Tokyo and Chicago fought a good fight. They sent in their best representative.
As reported by those on the scene.
A huge roar was heard at the famed beach the moment IOC President Jacques Rogge said the words "Rio de Janeiro" to announce the winner.
"I'm very happy because this will help sports and give a boost to kids of all ages and social classes," said Copacabana travel agent Ana Lucia Perez da Costa.
The Cariocas, as Rio citizens are known, raised their arms to celebrate on Copacabana, frantically waving flags and hugging each other.
